In a special cabinet meeting on May 25, 2026, CM V.D. Satheesan chaired discussions regarding shifting administrative subjects and responsibilities from the Social Justice Department to the newly formed Department for Senior Citizens Affairs.
The newly elected Kerala Cabinet approved the creation of a dedicated department for the welfare and protection of senior citizens during its first meeting on May 18, 2026. Stakeholders and senior citizen advocacy groups welcomed the move as timely.
The General Administration Department of the Government of Kerala officially issued G.O.(Ms) No. 63/2026/GAD constituting the dedicated Department of Senior Citizens Welfare, making Kerala the first state in India to establish a separate department specifically for senior citizens' welfare.
