The 280-km Akkulam–Chettuva stretch of the Kovalam–Bekal West Coast Canal (WCC) was commissioned, marking a major milestone in integrating Kerala's inland waterways. Managed by KWIL (a JV of CIAL and State Govt), the network restores historic channels (including Varkala's Chilakoor tunnel) for multimodal cargo logistics and ecotourism. The new UDF government committed to fully operationalize the remaining canal links under its integrated transport policy.
